English III Final Review Writing Assignment

Instructions: Choose one of the following topics and compose a multi-draft, 1-3-1 essay responding to the question. You must show all of your work and demonstrate that you went through all five steps of the writing process (including brainstorming, rough draft, revising and editing, and final draft) in composing your response. Your final draft must be typed, in MLA format, and must be no less than 500 words, Please be sure to check your spelling and grammar before turning in your essay as they will be graded together with the content of the essay. This essay will be due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, May 27, 2008.

A. Compare and contrast the characters Dexter (from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Winter Dreams) and Greg (from Walter Dean Myer’s The Treasure of Lemon Brown). Specifically, you should discuss the lessons each character learned about life and what they value. Discuss each author’s use of the modern literary elements we covered in class. Include specific examples from each story in your answer.

B. Identify all of the literary elements, poetic devices, and examples of figurative language used in the poem “Design” by Robert Frost. Include specific examples from the poem in your answer. Also discuss the theme of the poem and how Frost’s use of each device adds to that theme.

Several of you have asked me for a study guide for the final exam. As I have explained to all classes, the exam is an open-note exam. Because I am allowing you the use of all of your notes, worksheets, and prior tests during the test, I will not be handing out a study guide. The short answer to the question “what is on the final?” is “EVERYTHING.” If we covered it in class during the third or fourth nine weeks, it will likely show up on the final. Your notes to date are your study guide.

However, to refresh your memory as to what we covered so you can focus your studying on a few key areas, the following is a list of the topics that will be tested on the final.

2^nd Period – Today we completed a writing assignment in preparation for our review for the final exam. Students were asked to use the class period to write down everything they remember about the following topics which will be tested on the final exam: 1) vocabulary, 2) grammar, 3) poetry, 4) modern literary elements, 5) “Winter Dreams”, 6) “The Treasure of Lemon Brown”

Today:

Today we finished the Grammar Rock presentations. When class time permitted, students also participated in a creative writing exercise.

SENIORS – Final Exams were distributed today. They are due at the end of class tomorrow!

Classwork:

After the final Grammar Rock presentations, the class participated in a round robin writing exercise. Students were given the first line of a story and told to write for five minutes. After five minutes passed, the stories were exchanged with other classmates who continued writing in five minute increments. Stories were passed around four times before returning to the original author. When time allowed, we read stories in class. The stories were collected for a participation grade.
